Hi Explorer Families:
Hi Explorer Families:
Thanks, Jim Colie, for taking notes on our camping meeting. Just a quick note to share some timely links from today's Asheville Citizen Times, which feature the Great Smokies to show where our expedition will take us:
We will be learning about the amazing diversity of life in the Smoky Mountains as we study environmental history, both natural and cultural. Here is another link to historic photographs of the Great Smoky Mountains as the National Park Service was established. http://www.citizen-times.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=B0&Date=20090423&Category=SMOKIES&ArtNo=904230804&Ref=PH
These photos are especially interesting for our class studies as we read our first novel together: GHOST GIRL, by Delia Ray. We will begin this book together in class on Wednesday.
Finally, the Explorers held our first official class meeting this week to consider the Essential Learning Skills, as outlined by Odyssey Community School for optimal learning and self-reliance. The students shared a very productive brainstorming session to share ideas about what we can agree upon as a set of class rules. I am attaching these rules so that you can read them with your child and help to support our class cooperation, collaboration, self-organization, and learning.
Daniel and I are both excited to share this learning adventure with all of you! It was a great first week of school.
Thanks,
Edie
